Fuglefjella - Wildlife Hike at the Coast
Season: June - September
A Svalbard hike close to nature – from the valley floor and glacial rivers to sweeping views over the Icefjord
You came to Svalbard to experience wilderness and wildlife. And we believe there’s no better way to experience this than on foot, moving through the landscape, feeling the elements, and earning the views.
This hike through Bjørndalen and up to the top of Pilarberget and the bird cliffs delivers exactly that.
We begin with a short scenic drive along the coast to where the road ends. From here, the adventure continues on foot. The first challenge is crossing the wide valley, including a river that is fed by meltwater from the glacier. You can wear your own waterproof hiking boots, or take off your shoes and use our neoprene kayak boots. Wading through ice-cold glacial water is a refreshing — and unforgettable — way to start the day.
As we move through the valley, remember to keep an eye out for wildlife. Svalbard reindeer are often seen grazing nearby, calmly accompanying us on our way. Soon, the terrain begins to rise and the real climb starts. Our goal is the summit — and the reward waiting at the top makes every step worth it.
The ascent gains approximately 400 meters and is steep in places. You might feel out of breath on this true nature hike: no constructed trail, just rocks and uneven terrain. But we move at a comfortable pace, with breaks whenever needed.
At the top of Pilarberget, you’re rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views over Isfjorden. On clear days, you can look all the way to the glacier fronts on the other side of the fjord. On foggy days, the atmosphere is a different one — authentic and raw, filled with the eerie sounds of birds circling the cliffs. In late August and September, birdlife becomes quieter as many species begin their long migration south.
Before we head down, we take a well-deserved break to enjoy a warm lunch and coffee while soaking in the surroundings. You’ve earned it.
