Foxfonna Wilderness Hike

Foxfonna Wilderness Hike

kr1,790.00Price
  • Season: July - September

We begin with a scenic drive, heading 12 km deeper into the wide-open Advent Valley and leaving civilization behind as the landscape grows quieter. The road eventually ends, and the wilderness begins. We park near what was Longyearbyen’s last active coal mine, and already here we are rewarded with expansive views across the valley watching braided river streams weaving through the landscape at our feet.

From here, we continue on foot. The first part of the hike takes us steadily uphill as we quickly gain around 350 vertical meters. After this initial effort, the terrain opens up onto a vast plateau - a place where it feels as though you could walk forever. In the distance lies Foxfonna glacier, a calm inland glacier that has long since stopped moving. Whether we reach it or simply admire it from afar depends on how far we choose to walk, but the journey itself is just as rewarding.

At the top of Breinosa mountain, we take a well-deserved lunch break, surrounded by silence and open space. Throughout the hike, we also keep our eyes open for Arctic wildlife. With some luck, we may spot Arctic foxes, Svalbard ptarmigans, or other species that call this remote terrain home.

If time allows, we’ll make a few short stops in Advent Valley on the drive back to Longyearbyen. If you’ve already explored the mountains close to town and are ready to venture farther into Svalbard’s vast wilderness, this tour is for you.
