Between the Glaciers: Hike to Sarkofagen
January - December
Have you just arrived in Svalbard? This is a great introduction to the island’s nature and history. The hike offers a bit of everything: beautiful and varied landscapes, classic Svalbard mountains, and great views over Longyearbyen and Adventfjorden.
We start in a moraine landscape and pass the remains of an old coal mine – a clear reminder of Svalbard’s industrial past. From there, we continue up onto the Larsbreen glacier. Walking on the ice is a unique experience and gives insight into the region’s geology and climate. Throughout the hike, we keep an eye out for wildlife. There’s a chance to spot Arctic foxes, Svalbard ptarmigans, and other animals adapted to life in the High Arctic. In summer, you may also see Arctic flowers, mosses, and lichens growing between the rocks.
The trail is steep in parts, but we take breaks to enjoy the views and surroundings. At the top, we have lunch with panoramic views in all directions. In winter, it’s a special sight to see the lights of Longyearbyen far below, framed by the snow-covered peaks.
Expect to walk 8–10 kilometers with around 400 meters of elevation gain, through varied and sometimes rough terrain. This hike combines nature, history, wildlife, and a true Arctic experience.
