Trollsteinen - Hike to the Summit Rock
Season: May - October
Trollsteinen stands 850 meters above sea level, offering sweeping views over the mountains and valleys around Longyearbyen. The summit feels remote and rewarding, yet it’s the perfect day hike. A distinct and unusual rock formation marks the top.
The first part of the hike follows the same route as our Sarkofagen tour. We start in glacial moraine terrain. In summer, we may cross small rivers; in winter, we follow a snow-filled riverbed. The steep valley walls remind you just how vast the Arctic landscape is. From the beginning, we gain elevation steadily, with some steeper sections. We pass beneath Sarkofagen and step onto the glacier, where the walking becomes more gradual. Trollsteinen comes into view, while Longyearbyen slowly disappears behind us. Stop for a moment to take in the silence—the wind sweeping over the ice, meltwater rushing through narrow channels, or the soft rumble of distant rockfall.
The final stretch crosses a narrow ridge, which can feel exposed. Your guide will help choose the safest path. At the top, the reward is simple: the view, the quiet, and the satisfaction of reaching the summit. On the descent, keep an eye out for delicate Arctic flowers among the rocks. As Longyearbyen returns to view, you’ll know you’ve experienced something special.
