Sunny Winter

The sunlit winter is the season we wish could last forever – with perfect conditions for long journeys on skis and snowmobiles.

From February, the light begins to return to Svalbard after several months of darkness. At the start of the season, the sun remains low on the horizon, bathing the landscape in soft hues of blue and pink before daylight gradually grows stronger. This marks the beginning of the sun-winter – a magical time that lasts until May, when we once again welcome the Midnight Sun.

During winter, the fjords may be covered in sea ice, and wildlife begins to stir. It’s the time when you can spot tracks from foxes and reindeer, and with a bit of luck, discover seals resting on the ice or see birds returning as spring approaches. Even though the light has come back, temperatures can still be low – especially in March and April, when it can drop to -20°C and colder.

Sun-winter is the perfect time to explore the Arctic wilderness – on skis, snowshoes, or snowmobiles – and to spend nights outdoors in our winter camp, wilderness cabin or on one of our skiing expeditions.
