Polar Night

The Polar Night, when you can’t tell day from night, lasts from November 14th to January 29th.

On Svalbard, the Polar Night lasts from mid-November to the end of January – a time when the sun never rises above the horizon. The dark season is longer, stretching from October to February, but only during the Polar Night is it completely dark around the clock. Still, it’s brighter than many imagine – the moon, stars, and northern lights color the sky. In the weeks before and after the Polar Night, the landscape is painted in shades of blue during twilight, when the sun hovers just below the horizon – a phenomenon often called the blue hour or twilight season.

During this calm and atmospheric time of year, we offer ice cave tours where you can explore the frozen world beneath the glacier – and for the truly adventurous, spend the night inside the cave. It’s an experience like no other, deep in the dark, where nature itself provides the light.
